Welcome

This is the official site of the Glebe Singers. On this page you will find who and what the Glebe Singers are, where we rehearse, when and where our concerts are plus a few photographs and sound bites from previous concerts.

Our History

Glebe Singers was formed in 1999 and is based in Market Deeping. Glebe Singers perform three concerts a year in mainly local churches, and also sing at community events such as the community carol service in the Market Place, Market Deeping. The aims of Chairman David Scoffield and Musical Director Sara Woolhouse are for choir members to enjoy their singing and to achieve high standards of performance, and to increase access to choral music in all sections of the community.

Glebe Singers has a wide repertoire of music, from Andrew Lloyd Webber to John Rutter, from Lerner and Loewe to Vaughan Williams and Gershwin. Since the choir has been formed, they have performed at numerous local venues in Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire, and have concert bookings confirmed until the end of 2008. We have been privileged to have been involved in several national schemes for choirs, including the Making Music (National Federation of Music Societies) National Youth Project for 2004-5, and the spnm Adopt-A-Composer scheme in 2004. Have a look at our special events and current projects pages for more information.

Glebe Singers has also been involved in fund-raising for charity, and in May 2007 raised £1,000 for Marie Curie Nurses at a cheese-and-wine and musical evening in Market Deeping. A further charity concert, when the choir will join forces with Peterborough choir Cantatrici, is planned for May 2008.

The Glebe Singers seek to promote the art of choral singing within the Deepings and surrounding area, and is open to people of all ages, abilities and musical tastes.

The Glebe Singers consider music to be an important part of many peoples lives and capable of enriching the cultural and social well being of people who may not normally have access to music making with in the rural area.

In order to provide and facilitate opportunities for people to access choral singing we:

  1. Provide a wide repertoire of music encompassing different styles and levels of difficulty.
  2. Aim to achieve the highest quality of performance, leadership and outcomes in all activities.

2008 and beyond

The choir now has 50 members, including several younger singers. This section of young people – known as the ‘Glebelings’ – regularly perform their own items at our concerts. We would very much like to hear from new young singers to join our existing Glebelings, so please telephone or email us if you would like more information. Glebelings’ rehearsal starts at 7pm, with the rest of the choir starting at 7.30. Adults rehearse until 9.30, although younger members are able to leave at 9 if they wish.

We are always pleased to welcome new singers to the choir. If you have experience of singing, and would like to join us, please do come along to a rehearsal to see who we are and what we do!

If you are interested and live in or around the Deepings please either contact us via phone, via email or come to one of our rehearsals on a Wednesday 7.30pm at the Market Deeping Community Primary School, Willoughby Avenue, Market Deeping and try it out first hand, you never know, you might enjoy it (our rehearsals are always a laugh!). Go to the bottom of our special events page for directions or click here for a map of Market Deeping. (The school is the more easterly of the two in the middle of the page!)

We look forward to seeing you either at our next concert or at one of our rehearsals!
